In my day-to-day life there are times when my awareness is forced into the present, away from memories of the past and plans for the future. Sometimes it is because everything is beautiful and seems to be exactly in the right place. Other times it is because I am uncomfortable or in physical pain. Both states of consciousness are important to me. Although vastly different they are both firmly rooted in the present.
Sadly, I find it quite difficult to live in the moment. A compulsion to collect things makes it even harder. I hoard all kinds of things because of their connection to the past. Old clothes, photographs, and stuff I find on the side of the street seem too precious to throw away. Other people offer me their collections and I take them because I fear waste. I use these collections to document my experiences of living in the moment. My clothing is now the canvas and the personal ephemera is the same as paint. Painting is an excuse to collect as well as a way to purge.

I have yet to figure out how ceramics fits in with my painting....
