Exploring Fall Island: Integrative Ecology and Craft

Come learn about the plant ecology of Potsdam’s Fall Island and make some pottery!

Note: This event has been moved to Wednesday, August 28th at 6pm on account of rain. If the 28th is also rainy we will shift to holding the event at the Potsdam museum and working with plant specimens I I collect.

Join artist Sara Lynch and biologist Dr. Tom Langen for a deeper look into the ecology of a small park in the heart of Potsdam on Wednesday, August 28th, at 6 pm.

Participants will gather at the park on Fall Island next to the parking lot behind the hardware store. The first hour will be spent looking at plants, learning about what they are from Tom, pondering where they are growing, and hearing amusing personal anecdotes from Sara’s years spent foraging. The second hour will be spent decorating a pre-made ceramic vessel with plants gathered mindfully from the island.

The plant identification hour is free and open to anyone but you need to sign up and pay for the art-making portion in order to ensure there are enough supplies for everyone. The art portion is not open to those who do not attend the plant identification and ecology portion as that will provide the context and materials needed for the artistic work we will engage in.

All ages are welcome but children 10 and under need an adult with them.

No art or science experience is required but the inclination and ability to listen, learn, and get your hands a bit dirty are.

This event is subsidized by an Individual Artists grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). You can read more about it here.
